La Mortella Gardens is a large complex comprising a botanical garden, museum, and open-air theater, created starting in 1958 by Lady Susana Walton (1926–2010) and her husband, the English composer Sir William Walton (1902–1983).
Lady Walton cared for and developed the garden, designed by the famous English landscape architect Russell Page, for more than 50 years.
Today, La Mortella is a renowned tropical garden throughout Europe.
La Mortella is divided into two areas. The Valley, with its humid microclimate, shady and lush, hosts a picturesque collection of subtropical plants, with large trees, fountains, watercourses, and colorful blooms. The Hill, with a drier, bright, and sunny climate, houses plants from Mediterranean and warm environments nestled among the rocks and offers splendid views of the sea. Along the path, visitors can explore tropical greenhouses and an aviary with parrots.
La Mortella today belongs to the William Walton Foundation, which manages the garden and the Walton Museum and organizes concert seasons in the Concert Hall and the Greek Theater.
